Distinguished American Speaker SeriesProfessor Robert Putnam of Harvard University
As part of Ambassador Daniel C. Kurtzer's "Distinguished American Speaker
Series," on Monday, November 17, 2003, Professor Robert Putnam of Harvard University addressed a gathering at the Ambassador's residence that included the President of Israel's Supreme Court, three
university presidents, Members of Knesset, two former Ambassadors to the
U.S., and leaders of the Arab-Israeli and Ethiopian communities. He spoke on the topic, "Building Community: What do Israel and America
Have to Learn From One Another?" Professor Putnam, the founder of the
Saguaro Seminar: Civic Engagement in America, explained the concept of
"social capital" and described successful models for encouraging community
involvement and developing strategies to increase civic engagement.
