Distinguished American Speaker SeriesWalter Russell MeadHenry A. Kissinger Senior Fellow in U.S. Foreign
Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City
As part of Ambassador Daniel C. Kurtzer's continuing "Distinguished
American Speakers Series," on Tuesday, March 16, Members of Knesset,
officials from the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, journalists, and academics from Israel's leading universities
were treated to an evening of historical and current political analysis
with Walter Russell Mead, Henry A. Kissinger Senior Fellow in U.S. Foreign
Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City. Professor
Mead, author of the award-winning "Special Providence: American Foreign
Policy and How It Changed the World," described the history of U.S.
diplomacy as consisting of four schools, including the Hamiltonian,
Wilsonian, Jacksonian, and Jeffersonian branches. His insights into the
Kerry-Bush presidential face-off, the war on terror, Iraqi reconstruction,
and nuclear proliferation in Iran and North Korea enlightened his Israeli
audiences, especially the emphasis he placed upon on the influence of
domestic issues in the shaping of U.S. foreign policy.
