Distinguished American Speaker SeriesU.S. Filmmaker Aviva Kempner
U.S. filmmaker Aviva Kempner visited Israel in May 2004, presenting her award-winning film, "The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg," a documentary about the extraordinary Jewish baseball player who transcended religious
prejudice to become an American icon. During her stay in Israel, she met
with the religious and the secular, Israeli-Arabs, Israeli-Russian and
Israeli-Ethiopian immigrants, high school students and teachers, and
university students and professors. Aviva spoke on a range of issues,
including making a film reflective of its community, using sports as a
social equalizer, and maintaining ethnic identity within a larger society.
The highlight of her visit was a showing of her film at Ambassador Daniel C.
Kurtzer's residence before an audience of cultural figures, government
officials, filmmakers, NGO activists, university professors, and sports
writers.
