On August 29, 1997, State Department Spokesman James Rubin announced that
the Secretary of State will visit the Middle East
beginning September 10, 1997. Following is the Spokesman's statement:
Mr. Rubin: Secretary Albright will depart for the Middle East on September the 9th.
The secretary's trip will have several dimensions. First, the secretary will see what she
and the United States can do to help Israel and the Palestinians address the crisis of
confidence that she said has been blocking the resumption of negotiations. Second,
the secretary will explore with the parties how we can again find ways to move
forward towards a comprehensive peace. And third, the secretary will be consulting
with our friends in the region about a variety of other important issues, including the
security of the Persian Gulf, the issue of Iran, and the issue of Iraq.
Towards these objectives, the secretary will visit Israel, the Palestinian Authority,
Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Saudi Arabia. The United States continues to believe in the
importance of achieving a comprehensive peace settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict.
President Clinton and Secretary Albright will do everything they can to assist in that
effort. USIS Israel Home Page
