U.S. Ambassador to Israel Richard H. Jones
Nachshonim Storage Base is a "tangible demonstration" of U.S. support for Israel's security

December 6th, 2005

With a swift snip of the scissors, U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Richard H. Jones celebrated the culmination of four years of construction of the Nachshonim Storage Base, transferring the facility to IDF control on December 6th, 2005. Ambassador Jones emphasized that "the inauguration of this base represents only a small portion of the US commitment to peace in Israel. But it is significant, as it comprises half of the military-related construction generated by the Wye River Accords. This represents a success story among the many initiatives that have been undertaken. It was accomplished with much hard work and dedication and I pledge that we will continue to work to provide the same level of commitment in the future." The ultra-modern base, which consists of 210 buildings connected by a road network that spans twenty-three kilometers, was designed to help Israel Defense Force reservists in case of a deployment.

Ambassador Jones continued, "This base also represents one of the cornerstones of United States policy in the Middle East, our steadfast support for Israel's security. The base is a tangible demonstration of our belief that Israel is in a better position to make peace when it is capable of defending itself against current and future threats in the region."

The Nachshonim Storage Base, constructed under the management of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District, was built under the auspices of the 1998 Wye River Memorandum between Israel and the Palestinian Authority. At a total cost of $125-million, it is the largest in the Corps' Wye River program. The facility provides the IDF with a location for storing military equipment for decades. With specialized storage units to control humidity and dust levels, the base will store supplies, vehicles, and other equipment that artillery, infantry and armored brigades will need during a call up.
