Welcome Statement by
Ambassador Richard H. Jones
Upon presenting his credentials to the
President of the State of Israel
Residence of the President
Monday, September 26, 2005
It is an honor to represent the United States as Ambassador to Israel, a country with which we have a strong and special relationship, based on shared values, mutual interests and a rich history of close cooperation on issues of great consequence for both nations.
Israel is a staunch ally and reliable friend in the global war on terror. We look forward to continued cooperation with our friends in Israel in this difficult endeavor. Our commitment to Israel's security is unwavering.
My arrival coincides with a time of extraordinary change and opportunity in the region. We applaud Israel for the courage it has demonstrated through Gaza disengagement, and encourage Israel and the Palestinian Authority to seize this opportunity to advance prospects for a just and lasting peace through implementation of the agreed Roadmap.
The Bush administration's commitment to the vision of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and security is steadfast. I feel privileged to have been entrusted with the responsibility to help the parties advance our shared goal of peace and stability in the region. Mr. President, I assure you I will spare no effort in this regard and likewise pledge to do everything in my power to strengthen the ties which bind our two countries together.
